What we do

We see the fine line between nature and nurture.

Three hunters in outdoor gear stand on grassy slopes, with snow patches and mountain peaks in the background, possibly in a snowy mountain range.

Hunters have a connection with the outdoors that goes far deeper than recreation. We appreciate the delicate balance between indigenous and introduced species and the impact these creatures have on each other and their various ecosystems, and we see (all too clearly) the role we must play as guardians of this fragile relationship.

The Hunters for Conservation Trust aims to promote and support efforts by hunters and others to achieve the best conservation outcomes for New Zealand. To raise public perception of the role of hunters as crucial actors both at an ecosystem and national level, and to promote and advance the interests of hunters in Aotearoa.

HFC's primary goal is to collaborate with existing hunter groups in New Zealand that advocate or represent hunters' interests. HFC aims to establish a sustainable organisation focused on:

  • Mountain landscape with snow-capped peaks, green forested hills, a river flowing through the valley under a cloudy sky.

    Education

Which helps hunters better relate to and operate within the ecosystems they love and educates the public about the vital role hunters play in maintaining our natural ecosystems.

  • A peaceful forest stream flowing over rocks surrounded by lush green trees and foliage.

    Advocacy

Helping our lawmakers see the big picture - giving a voice to our introduced species - advocating for common sense conservation approaches.

  • A man in camouflage clothing is carrying a large fish on his back while hiking along a river in a mountainous landscape during sunset, with other hikers following behind him.

    Management

Promoting cutting-edge methods for habitat preservation, species protection and sustainable management of introduced game animals, game birds and fish.

  • Three hunters in camouflage and dark clothing exploring a mountain landscape with snow patches, grassy slopes, and snow-capped peaks in the distance.

    Collaboration

Actively involving local communities, industries, and indigenous communities in crafting sustainable solutions. Play a leading role in connecting, promoting, and enhancing collaboration among government agencies and hunting interest groups.

  • Two colorful birds with outstretched wings perched on rocks in a mountainous landscape at sunset.

    Guardianship

Being seen as caretakers of wetlands, aquatic areas and the beautiful natural landscapes of New Zealand.
